Sweet Dreams

You know the feeling: you go to bed tired, but once your head hits the pillow you can’t seem to fall asleep; your mind races, worrying about hundreds of things.

A good night’s sleep is essential for our health and wellbeing. However, stress often plays havoc with our sleep patterns, waking us up at night or preventing us from falling asleep in the first place.

How do we stop this cycle? One great natural sleep remedy is aromatherapy.

Below are 6 essential oils to use at bedtime to catch those much needed z’s. You can add them to an aromatic bath (6 drops in a full bath), put a few drops on your pillowcase or use an aromatherapy diffuser.

1. Lavender Oil

Allow the soothing, harmonizing, healing, and relaxing scent of lavender to calm your mind and body. Place a few drops of pure lavender oil on your pillowcase or place in a bath at bedtime.

2. Roman Chamomile Oil

Let the peaceful, serene scent of roman chamomile wash away any stress and tension while it balances your body and mind. Combine with lavender essential oil for an extra soothing blend.

3. Neroli Oil

The floral, loving and encouraging scent of neroli essential oil relieves insomnia and is soothing for mind and body. It is best used when sleeplessness is caused by anxiety or stress. Especially lovely to add to a bath before bedtime.

4. Sweet Marjoram Oil

This warm-spicy oil is best when combined with lavender to relieve insomnia. In addition, its warming and comforting properties relieve tired, tense muscles. For this use, dilute appropriate amount (6 drops of essential oil to 1 oz. of carrier oil) and gentle massage your aching muscles.

5. Bergamot Oil

The fruity and refreshing scent of bergamot oil helps relieve stress, nervous tension and insomnia especially if linked to depression.

Note of safety: Bergamot essential oil is safe to be inhaled but when used in baths, or direct application on your skin it may cause photosensitivity, so please refrain from sunbathing, sun-beds and UV light. So please don’t apply this oil on your skin before sun exposure. Photosensitivity can last for several days.

6. Sandalwood Oil

The sweet and woody scent of sandalwood induces a meditative, calming and harmonizing state of mind and body, releasing stress and tension.

When using essential oils please always make sure to not apply the oils directly to your skin and learn about their contraindications. Please don’t use aromatherapy when pregnant unless you know which oils are safe for you. When in doubt please contact an Aromatherapist to assist you in choosing the right oils for your needs.
