Melanie of Foxy Parties

When it comes to hosting the perfect girls night in, Los Angeles startup Foxy Parties is on it! Founded by Melanie Monroe (left) and Sarah Keith (right), Foxy Parties is a woman-run company offering creatively curated and catered craft parties for grown ups. We recently caught up with Melanie to learn more about how the mother of two turned her love for party planning into her dream job.

WHAT WERE YOU DOING 10 YEARS AGO, BEFORE FOXY PARTIES?

MM: I was in baby land. I have 10 and 6 year old boys. I flexed my creativity with birthday parties for them, but was pretty immersed in straight up motherhood.

IS FOXY PARTIES YOUR DREAM JOB?

MM: This is definitely my dream job in many ways. I can be creative, flexible with my time, and can inspire and facilitate creativity, all while creating more community by gathering (mostly) women together!

WHEN DID YOU HAVE YOUR “AH HA” MOMENT OF FOXY PARTIES?

MM: My ah-ha moment for Foxy Parties came when I realized that I’d rather be at home with friends than out on the town. So to marry staying in, doing crafts/making beautiful things with friends, as well as cheese and wine, was so exciting.HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH THIS BUSINESS CONCEPT AND DID YOU HAVE EXPERIENCE IN IT PRIOR?

MM: I came up with the concept for Foxy Parties, after my babies got a bit more independent, and I wanted to get more serious about throwing parties, and helping other women do the same. I approached a mutual friend, Sarah Keith (we hardly knew each other!) who was a beautiful caterer, with my idea. We decided to become partners, and combine those two things in a fresh, unique way.

HOW DID YOU FUND YOUR STARTUP?

MM: We “funded” our start up with our own money. As we don’t have a storefront, we really just needed a bit of money to get some great images of what we do, and have a web designer put the finishing touches on the website I created for us. After that, it was, and still is, word of mouth advertising, as well as a small, but growing, social media presence.

NAME 3 OF THE SCARIEST MOMENTS WHEN DOING THIS?

MM: We are fortunate that we haven’t really had any scary moments doing what we do. I’d say the most stressful is doing live Instagram stories where we have to speak on camera!WHAT IS YOUR PIECE OF ADVICE TO ANYONE WHO WANTS TO STOP WHAT THEY’RE DOING AND CREATE THEIR “DREAM JOB”?

MM: My advice for anyone who wants to create their dream job, is to have a solid vision for whatever it is that makes you feel happy and fulfilled. If possible, find a partner, as it is always more fun with a friend, and trust the timing. That is my mantra for 2019!
