Charcuterie boards are perfect for pre-dinner entertaining, taking on a picnic or even as a light meal. Traditional charcuterie boards are pretty straightforward—you buy an array of meats and cheeses, some soft, some medium, some hard, and throw in crackers, olives and perhaps seasonal fruit. Vegan charcuterie boards, on the other hand, can be a little trickier.
My advice is to get creative and make something that looks colorful and vibrant. Below are 7 steps to use as a guide to get you started. (Don’t let them limit you—use your gut!)
You can go with wood, marble or slate—the choice is yours! And be sure to grab a few small bowls for your accoutrements.
You will likely need knives and small spoons to go with your board. Also, be sure to include toothpicks if serving olives or small pieces of fruit.
Spreads are the best starting place. I suggest some sort of hummus (ie. easy homemade hummus), baba ganoush, vegan nut cheese, olive tapenade or all of the above.
You really can’t go wrong with crackers, bread or pita. In my case, I used a delicious gluten-free bread.
You have a lot of options here, depending on the season! It’s best to use something with a crunch and that can easily be dipped into the spreads. Consider the variations in color when you choose, as well.
Pick something savory to go with the board. I suggest spiced nuts (walnuts, almonds or pistachios) or whole olives if you aren’t doing tapenade.
Now pick something sweet! I usually opt for fresh fruit but preserves or honey are great too.
Get creative in arranging your board, by mixing shapes and colors for a visually pleasing display.
