Comparison: The Thief of Joy

I see it too often. People comparing themselves to others, whether it be people they know or even people they don’t know. Though comparison can play a positive role some of the time, more often than not, comparing yourself to others leaves you feeling ‘less than.’

But did you ever realize that in doing so, you are judging a book by its cover? If you think you can tell by appearance alone how great someone’s life is, I implore you to think again. You couldn’t possibly know what’s really going on in the lives of the people you may be comparing yourself to. You don’t know what’s going through their minds, how healthy their relationships are, or any other intricate details of their lives.

And yet you choose to compare yourself or your life to theirs. Worse still is that most often, you may be basing the comparison on one single thing, whether it be their big house, their fancy car or their seemingly “perfect” body. Because of that one detail, you end up deducing that the rest of their lives must be perfect. You create a story for them that is almost certainly inaccurate! Low and behold, because of that one detail that led to your story of their perfect life, you decide that their life is better than yours.

This begs the ultimate question: Why would you wish for someone else’s life based on one detail, and without having any details of the intricacies of their entire life? It’s crazy!

Comparison really and truly is the thief of joy. The truth is that you don’t have all the facts on the lives of those you may be comparing yourself to, so be careful what you wish for!

The next time you catch yourself in the throes of the comparison game, stop and look at everything that is right in your life. Be grateful. Look around and remember how blessed you are. Because if you don’t, you may end up regretting and lamenting about something you didn’t know you had until it was gone.
