Today is International Women’s Day, a globally recognized day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. Observed since the early 1900s, IWD is not affiliated with any one group or organization; it’s a day to bring the world together in recognizing the value that women bring to individual communities, as well as a call to action for accelerating gender parity with regard to intersectionality.
As Dr. Shola Mos-Shogbamimu, founder of the Women in Leadership publication told Vogue,
“In a patriarchal system, International Women’s Day was a way to put women on the map, but every day is still men’s day, so we still need time in the calendar to recognize women. To take a step back and appreciate who women are as mothers, as entrepreneurs, as community leaders, as young women of vision, as girls rising up to fight the modern-day struggle.”
We’ve seen exciting social progress lately with movements such as #MeToo, the Women’s March, and a record number of women elected to Congress in 2020, but the struggle to close the gender gap is still very real. According to the Harvard Business Review,
“Despite women’s progress in top leadership, the gender pay gap in the United States has decreased on average by less than 0.4 cents annually since 1960. Iceland, which holds the world record for women’s representation on boards (44%), continues to have a 14% gender pay gap — equivalent to that of most Western countries.”
March 8th is a great reminder to do what you can to support and empower women, but today’s message goes beyond one day of the year. Make every day Women’s Day by recognizing the value women bring to society and continuing to fight for gender balance and intersectionality in the workplace.
