[endimages]Interested in incorporating meditation into your life, but not sure where to start or what to expect? We spoke with Suze Yalof Schwartz, founder of Unplug Meditation in Los Angeles, to get the lowdown! She gave us these ten insightful tips for the meditation newbie.
1. Your Mind Will Wander
You will be shocked how much your mind will wander. But, a wandering mind is a great thing! It gives you the opportunity to redirect it to a single point of focus. This is the meditation workout.
2. You Don’t Have To Be Uncomfortable
If your legs fall asleep in a crossed leg position, move them. Unless you are at a Zen monastery, then you might get hit with a stick.
3. You Have Time
Even if you think you don’t, you do have time to meditate. You can meditate in your car in traffic. You can meditate when you wait in line at Starbucks or when you wash your hands. There are so many moments in the day when we can be present and focus on what we are doing when we are doing it.
4. Taking Time Makes Time
When you take the time to slow down and sit, it gives you control over your whole day. When you start the morning racing out of the gate, you never get ahead of it.
5. Make An Appointment
Put it in your schedule and make meditation a priority. Nothing happens when you are meditating – it’s when you are living your life that you see all the benefits.
A lot of teachers will tell you that their way is the only way but it’s not! There are more ways to meditate than there are to make an egg – and exploring all of them keeps it interesting and keeps you practicing. Eventually, you will find your favorite.
7. Don’t Expect Friends To Join You
Meditation, though beneficial for everyone, is a personal decision and people have to come to it when they are ready. That said, I’ve never met anyone who couldn’t benefit from it and there are no negative side effects!
8. You Are Doing It Right
As one of our Unplug teachers Megan Monahan always says, “The only bad meditation is the one you don’t do!”
9. Let Go
Let go of anything that is not happening during your practice. Feel free to stress about the future or cry about the past, but not during your meditation. Focus on being fully present.
Make a real commitment to meditate every day for real results. Even if it’s only for five minutes a day for a solid two weeks, you will see yourself change! It works for everyone.
