Q&A: Marni Chaikin

When did you first fall in love with the barre workout?

I was living in LA but dancing in NYC for a month and my friend sent me an email telling me if I took this “barre” class with her that I would look like a super model. I actually laughed out loud when I read it and then thought “why not?”  Barre wasn’t a “thing” yet but I wanted to try anything that had to do with dance and fitness. As soon as I went to my first class I was hooked. I returned to LA on a mission to bring something like it to my city. Soon after, I met Carrie Rezabek Dorr in an entrepreneurial networking group and everything unfolded beautifully.

What are the biggest benefits of the Pure Barre workout?

For me it’s a combination of so many things. I get the incredible benefits of feeling like I am efficiently toning every single area on my body that needs to keep toned and also gives me the space of an hour to gain some mental clarity. Pure Barre is very much about mind/body connection and being in the moment with yourself, so it gives me a true chance to be focused and helps me stay present and light on my feet the rest of the day.

What is your favorite part about being a Pure Barre Owner & Instructor?

The incredible benefits you hear from people every day – clients will come up to my daily and tell me everything from “Pure Barre helped me lose my baby weight and feel great about my body again”  to “Pure Barre helped me strengthen my core and thus avoid back surgery” to “Pure Barre helped me get through a bad break up” or another life crisis. This kind of feedback from clients is so gratifying. Having something like Pure Barre in one’s life isn’t even about the physical transformation – it becomes about changing your whole life when you commit to a technique like this. It’s really awe-inspiring.

What advice do you have for someone is interested in trying Pure Barre for the first time?

Give yourself TIME. It might take you a few classes to get the hang of it. Don’t be discouraged. DO come to class 15 minutes early the first time (like most studios suggest) DO come prepared to work and possibly feel a little lost. BE okay with being a little sore. DON’T wait a week to come back – we like to say it doesn’t get “easier” but it DOES get better.  DO ask questions to your teachers and the staff if you are unsure about anything like what “tuck” is or “pulse”  It’s okay.  We are here to help. Try and attend a free “breaking down the barre” workshop that is offered free to existing clients at all studios. It helps to break down the little nuances of class and gives you a deeper understanding of the technique and some helpful hints that otherwise might take you a bit of time to grasp.  And remember – it’s supposed to be FUN too so go easy on yourself. Every single person in the room with you was in your exact same spot  as a newbie at some point. It’s a loving and supportive community so try not to get discouraged. If you stick with it I PROMISE you will see changes in your body and in your life – you just have to give it a little time. Rome wasn’t built in a day. Figuring out Pure Barre, for most, doesn’t happen instantaneously.

Aside from Pure Barre, what other types of workouts do you do?

I’ll occasionally take a yoga class or go on hikes since I live near some amazing hiking trails, but Pure Barre is my main staple for  exercise. I try and take at least 4 times a week.  On a great week it’s 5-6 times.

What is your workout motto or mantra?

As a mom it’s incredibly difficult to find a work-life balance without feeling guilty. When I take an hour out of my day to take class or do something nice for myself I am constantly reminding myself that it will ultimately make me a better mom. And it does. So it’s probably something along the lines of “making time for yourself is the best thing you can do.” And also “don’t forget to breathe” is a big one for me.

What do you like to wear when you workout or instruct a class?

Beyond Yoga Gathered Essential Leggings because they fit so well and the fabric is incredible.  I’ll usually wear a Beyond Yoga Cami on top with a Pure Barre branded t-shirt or zip up hoodie if I’m teaching or taking, as well to show a little PB love too.  And of course Pure Barre sticky socks!

What is your favorite BEYOND YOGA piece?

Right now it’s my Beyond the Bump Maternity Tank  in Heather Gray because I’m nine months pregnant!  I wear it a few times a week. It feels SO good against my skin and fits PERFECTLY.  Even in my final stages of pregnancy.

Who inspires you?

My daughter. Hands down. She is so full of love and life and energy and she makes me want to be a better person every moment of every day.

Complete the sentence: i am BEYOND…

…inspired and grateful for my wonderful life.
