And, we recently had the pleasure of catching up with Jenny Wecker, the founder of Fawn Design, to learn more about how she launched her dream career.
WHAT WERE YOU DOING 7-10 YEARS AGO BEFORE FAWN DESIGN?
JW: It’s funny because I am only 24! So, that long ago I was still in grade school! After I graduated high school, I was going to college and working as a pediatric dental assistant. I would work on Fawn Design really late at night/morning, sleep for a few hours, go to work until 5, then head to night school and repeat!
IS FAWN DESIGN YOUR DREAM JOB?
JW: I never thought I’d become passionate about diaper bags! But, I have always had love for sewing and designing. I’ve always wanted to come up with something innovative, and I think the Fawn Design bag is just that. Yes, Fawn Design has become a dream job to me! I also love being able to be home with my two daughters and husband, who also does Fawn Design full time.
WHEN DID YOU HAVE YOUR “AH HA” MOMENT OF FAWN DESIGN?
JW: My “ah ha” moment was almost 4 years ago. We were talking with friends and my friend who was pregnant at the time was talking about how she couldn’t find a diaper bag that she loved and right then I knew thats what I wanted to do! Create a really stylish, simple and functional diaper bag.
HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH THIS BUSINESS CONCEPT AND DID YOU HAVE EXPERIENCE IN IT PRIOR?
JW: I really didn’t mean for Fawn Design to turn into a full-blown brand and company. I designed our bag and starting sewing them by hand and selling them to my friends to make some extra money. My husband majored in business management so he saw the potential and helped me so much with all the business side of things (and still does)! I always say I went to the business school of YouTube. If I don’t know something I will try hard to always find the answer.
HOW DID YOU FUND YOUR START UP?
JW: We used our savings when we initially started, back when I was hand-making the bags. Once our demand was way too much for me, we decided to manufacture them. We had no money and couldn’t get a business loan. We decided to run a Kickstarter campaign back in 2014 and we were able to raise $42,000 (our goal was $25,000) in 15 days to help get the manufacturing ball rolling! Our Kickstarter campaign was actually featured in the New York Times for really successful campaigns in a short amount of time!
NAME 3 OF THE SCARIEST MOMENTS YOU HAD WHEN DOING THIS?
JW: Launching our Kickstarter in December 2014, my husband and I quitting our full time jobs, and introducing our first color, other than black or brown! It was gray and it has become a best seller (thankfully).
WHAT IS YOUR PIECE OF ADVICE TO ANYONE WHO WANTS TO STOP WHAT THEY’RE DOING AND CREATE THEIR “DREAM JOB”?
JW: Be ready to hustle! Dont wait for opportunities to come to you, go seek them out!
