How To Get Involved On Women’s Day
International Women’s Day, celebrated annually on March 8th, is a day set aside to commemorate women’s achievements and women’s rights, and dates all the way back to 1911. The day acts as a reminder of all women have accomplished and how far we still have to go in many areas. International Women’s Day is celebrated in countries all over the world in the form of marches, speeches, and more.
This year’s official International Women’s Day theme is #PressForProgress, meant to emphasize the movement toward gender parity. According to internationalwomensday.com, “Individually, we’re one drop but together we’re an ocean. Commit to a ‘gender parity mindset’ via progressive action. Let’s all collaborate to accelerate gender parity, so our collective action powers equality worldwide.”
Sounds great, but how can you get involved? Here are 3 ways to take action this week:
Share Your Story
Your voice matters, so take a moment on March 8 to use it. Post on social media about International Women’s Day, and why it’s a great time to celebrate how far we’ve come as a gender but also a day to recognize the strides we still need to take as a collective society. Talk about women you admire who have achieved great things, and acknowledge some of the issues our gender still faces in the meantime. Use this year’s hashtag — #PressForProgress – in your post.
Participate in a Local Event
One of the best ways to honor women is to surround yourself with other inspiring women! From marches to festivals, there are so many meaningful events happening this Thursday all around the world. Check out internationalwomensday.com for events taking place in your city, such as MashUp’s International Women’s Day Celebration in Los Angeles.
Donate to a Women’s Charity
Not available to attend an event? There are other meaningful ways to get involved. Consider donating to a female-focused charity this year to honor International Women’s Day. Some awesome charities that could use your support are (but not limited to!) Planned Parenthood, Global Fund For Women, or She Should Run.
