Emily of Modern Macrame
Macrame, a form of textile making using knots instead of weaving, is making a serious comeback. Leading the revival is Emily Katz, whose brand Modern Macrame allows her to teach and inspire the craft around the globe. We caught up with Emily to learn more about her mission and how she created her dream job.
WHAT WERE YOU DOING 7-10 YEARS AGO BEFORE EMILYKATZ/MODERN MACRAME?
EK: When I was 19, I dropped out of art school and ended up running my own fashion brand. It was exciting but stressful to learn everything I needed to know from scratch, and all self-financed.
IS EMILYKATZ/MODERN MACRAME YOUR DREAM JOB?
EK: It is right now! I am so grateful to be able to employ an amazing team, travel and explore, connect with people around the world and share my story and teach my craft. I am really most excited about making large scale artworks and evolving the business. I work too much right now, but I am really happy with the output!
WHEN DID YOU HAVE OUR “AH HA” MOMENT OF EMILYKATZ/MODERN MACRAME?
EK: It is happening every day. But the most recent moment was when our macramé kits arrived. My assistant, Shannon, reminded me that we started talking about them in the winter, and now, nearly a year later, they arrived. The box is so beautiful (designed by Jennifer James Wright) and the team I had to put them all together made it feel smooth and easy!
HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH THIS BUSINESS CONCEPT AND DID YOU HAVE EXPERIENCE IN IT PRIOR?
EK: I learned macrame from my mom in 2012, and never imagined I would be the owner of a macramé business. I was in fashion before, ran two clothing lines from 2003-2009. I did everything in those businesses. From designing collections, styling, production, website design, managing orders, you name it, I did it. So I have carried those hustler skills with me to this enterprise!
HOW DID YOU FUND YOUR START UP?
EK: Savings and the orders just kept coming in!
NAME 3 OF THE SCARIEST MOMENTS YOU HAD WHEN DOING THIS.
EK: Saying no to a large order that was stressing me out so that I could focus on important projects. Not knowing if there will be enough money to pay my growing team. And, when my supplier in China called me to tell me she quit the day my rope was supposed to board the ship.
WHAT IS YOUR PIECE OF ADVICE TO ANYONE WHO WANTS TO STOP WHAT THEY’RE DOING AND CREATE THEIR “DREAM JOB”?
EK: I had another job that paid my bills for the first year of running MODERN MACRAMÉ. It helped so much with the stress of making art/making a living.
I would say, know what you want to do. Can you visualize it? Can you see yourself already there? I meditate on my growth and success often, setting new goals, dreams, ideas for myself and my company. One of the things that I try to do often, is to really RELISH in the successes. So often we breeze by the good things that happen. CELEBRATE each step and remember to enjoy your life!
