No More Deprivation

dep·ri·va·tion

ˌdeprəˈvāSHən/

noun

1. the damaging lack of material benefits considered to be basic necessities in a society. the lack or denial of something considered to be a necessity.

With the holidays upon us, I’ve been thinking a lot about the concept of deprivation. Many people deprive themselves before and after the holidays as a way to make up for indulgences during their celebrations.

The truth is that deprivation runs rampant in our society year round. It seems like a necessary evil but it’s not. Why do we think that we need to deprive ourselves in order to achieve what we want?

  • We deprive ourselves of calling the guy or girl we like because we think that’s how to get him or her.

  • We deprive ourselves of any indulgence because we believe that’s the way to lose weight.

  • We deprive ourselves of going after things we want because we think we aren’t good enough or don’t deserve it.

For all the reasons that you can come up with to convince yourself that deprivation is the right approach, here are the reasons why it’s not.

  • Just call them already! If they don’t like you because you called, they were never going to like you. Be who you are because they should like you for exactly who you are.

  • The way to lose weight (and, by the way, that’s not the goal) is far from deprivation – it’s through balance, health and moderation. Deprivation creates the very opposite of that you are trying to achieve.

  • You get what you deserve and you deserve it – it’s yours for the taking.

So, get up and go for it – no more deprivation. Stop torturing yourself and start enjoying your life!
