Confidence Boost

Imagine the last time you were feeling stressed out or down about something. How did you handle it? Did you talk yourself out of it with positive words or give into the negative thoughts?

As Julie Hogan of Verily writes, “Too often, we berate ourselves for not being pretty enough, smart enough, strong enough. Our inner thoughts play host to all sorts of negativity—which is exactly the opposite of what we need to show that we are pretty/smart/strong or whatever we want to be channeling. It may sound hokey, but there is an easy way to boost your confidence when it’s flagging: affirmations.”

What exactly are affirmations? Simple. Affirmations mean talking to yourself in positive phrases—often while looking at yourself in the mirror. Some examples could be, “I am beautiful” or “I am lovable.” And while looking in the mirror and talking to yourself can seem a bit silly, research shows affirmations actually do work in giving you a confidence boost.

Our biggest takeaways from Hogan’s article:

  • Standing in front of a mirror is a great way to start being kind to yourself.
  • Using your own name when talking about yourself makes you more likely to give yourself support and advice.
  • Personal affirmations aren’t confined to your appearance. They can also help you identify and embrace your strengths.
  • Affirmations can be used any time, whether at work, home, or with friends or family.
  • Focusing on your positive qualities and strengths not only boost your self-assurance and sense of well-being but can, in turn, influence the way you cope in stressful situations.
