5 Ways to Destress

It’s so important to take time out of your day to just relax. I know that’s easier said than done, but trust me, your body will thank you. We all need outlets in our lives that help us de-stress, clear our minds and elevate our mood. Here are 5 foolproof ways to destress during your busy week.

 

1. Morning Meditation

 

Everyone has a different relationship to meditation. I find it hard to sit still, focus on my breath and be in the moment. My husband, on the other hand, wakes up early every morning and meditates before we start our days. When he starts off his day off meditating, he always has a more productive day and feels more energized and happy. Luckily (for those of us who need a little help in this department) there are tons of meditation apps on your phone that are so easy to use. Headspace or Simple Habit are great ones to try.

 

 

2. Work That Body

 

Exercise is vital for not only your physical health, but your mental health, as well. Whether it’s yoga, running, weightlifting or biking; whatever form of exercise you enjoy (OK, that word may be a bit of a stretch at times) set time aside during your day to work that body! When you exercise, your body produces endorphins that improve your mood, thus, reducing stress.

 

 

3. Don’t Mind If I Netflix

 

Often times, when we want to lounge and watch a few episodes of our favorite show, we feel guilty about it. The key to relaxation is to not feel this way. In order to reduce your stress level, you need to shut your mind off from whatever is going on around you and be present. In this case, don’t feel bad about sitting on the couch for an hour or so; be in the moment and enjoy yourself.

 

 

4. Keep A Journal

 

We don’t always want to talk to someone else about our thoughts or feelings—and with a journal, we don’t have to. Getting your thoughts out on paper is a great way to clear your mind and deal with whatever is stressing you out. Try to remember something great about your day or something you are grateful for and write it down—this will brighten your mood and lower your stress levels.

 

 

5. Sing Out Loud

 

My absolute favorite thing to do on my ride home from work is to sing in the car. After a long, crazy day teaching K-4th graders how to read, nothing is greater than jamming out to some Earth, Wind and Fire. Singing out loud with the windows down, and the wind blowing through your hair will turn your mood around and help you achieve that stress-free feeling. Try it—you’ll be smiling the whole drive home.
